Abstract

The number of electronic texts in the humanities is growing fast and many libraries are seeking to acquire them from various sources or to provide access to them. Building, in part, on the experience of those scholars who work with electronic texts in literary and linguistic computing, this article surveys some issues which libraries may need to consider as they begin to establish collection-development policies for electronic texts. An overview of existing texts and applications is given, which leads to a discussion of markup schemes. The Text Encoding Initiative's proposals for documentating electronic texts are surveyed, and the article concludes with a discussion of software and access tools
